Meet Mycah Dior (aka @clawzbydior_): Nail Academy owner, Cynthia Erivo’s go-to artist, and only 19 years old.

At such a young age, Mycah has already garnered an astounding professional career—and she’s just getting started. Read on to learn her fave techniques, her take on the new OPI GelColor formula, and why she believes consistency is key.

OPI: Where did your journey in the nail world begin?

Dior: My journey being an artist truly began when I was a toddler. I would say I was about 5 or 6 years old when I first discovered my love for anything and everything beauty related. As I grew up though, I’ve always loved using my hands to make things whether that be jewelry, crocheting, or even making slime lol. I’ve always found ways to be creative with anything I do. A decade later, my professional journey in the nail world started during the pandemic. I was 14 and I was in high school. With so much time on my hands during quarantine, I decided to dive deeper into a hobby—soon turned passion—for nails. Due to all the nail salons being closed during the 2020 pandemic, I wondered what would happen if I did my mom and my nails with a little DIY kit from CVS… and here we are 4 years later.

OPI: What inspired you to start The Clawz Academy Nail Training Program and what’s the most rewarding part of teaching aspiring nail technicians?

Dior: I was inspired by my desire to give back to the community that shaped me. I know how overwhelming it can feel starting out, navigating the techniques, building confidence, and learning through trial and error. I wanted to create a space where aspiring nail technicians could feel supported and equipped with the tools they need to succeed, without having to go through the struggles I faced alone. The most rewarding part of teaching is seeing the spark in someone’s eyes when they realize what they’re capable of. It reminds me why I fell in love with this industry in the first place.

OPI: Your nail art and skills have taken you to doing nails for so many different events, photo shoots, movies, and more! What was the first step that brought you to these amazing moments in your career?

Dior: The very first step was staying consistent. With consistency comes reputation, from there, word began to spread, and one connection led to another. I said yes to every opportunity, big or small, knowing each was a stepping stone toward something greater. By staying true to my style and continuously pushing my limits, my work caught the attention of clients in the fashion, entertainment, and beauty industries. That first leap of faith is what opened the door to all these incredible moments in my journey. Each experience taught me something new and prepared me for the next. By trusting the process, staying focused, and always striving to elevate my work, I was able to turn my dreams into reality.

OPI: Your nail art showcases such intricate and stunning color, designs, and textures! Where do you find inspiration for your intricate and stunning nail art designs?

Dior: I’m a very visual person so I may get inspiration from patterns on clothing, intricate details in jewelry, art pieces or just the overall vibe my client brings to the table. I love connecting with each client to understand their mood, and that helps me create designs that are not just trendy but also personal and unique.

OPI: What do you love most about OPI Gel Nail Polish with Intelli-Gel Technology™ for nail art?

Dior: OPI's new Intelli-Gel has definitely made creating intricate nail art so much easier. The self-leveling formula is a game-changer for precision, it keeps every brushstroke exactly where I want it without streaking or flooding, which is crucial for detailed line work.

OPI: What excites you most about being only 19, yet having already made such an impressive splash in the nail industry?

Dior: It’s exciting to know that I’ve built an incredible foundation at such a young age. I’ve turned my passion into a thriving career, proving to myself and others that age doesn’t define your ability to succeed. It’s empowering to realize I’m inspiring others while still evolving and refining my craft. Plus, the opportunities ahead are limitless, I’m not just participating in the industry, I’m actively shaping it with my unique vision. I can’t wait to see what I’ve achieved at 25—22 even!

OPI: As a successful nail artist, what are your top tips and advice for other aspiring nail technicians?

Dior: My top tip would be to TRUST THE PROCESS AND STAY CONSISTENT!!!! Any free moment you have, practice your craft. Success doesn’t happen overnight, but with dedication, growth is inevitable.

Q8: What are the nail art trends to watch for in the New Year? Any upcoming looks you’re excited to try?

Dior:As we step into 2025, I know for a fact Cat Eye is going to be around for a while. The velvet-like finish adds depth and dimension to any set and has been very popular on social media recently. I’m excited to experiment more with layered 3D embellishments, as they offer a canvas for major personalization. And it’s perfect for clients who love charms and embellishments to take their set to the next level.

OPI: What nail art techniques do you use most to create stunning, eye-catching designs?

Dior: A nail art technique I use the most to create my sets would be anything hand-drawn. I absolutely love detailed line work, because it allows me to turn each set into a true work of art. Whether it’s precise geometric patterns, delicate swirls, letters, or bold retro designs, there’s something so satisfying about the focus and precision it takes to create those clean, eye-catching details.

OPI: Have you noticed a difference in ease when creating intricate nail art using the new OPI Intell-Gel?

Dior: I have noticed a difference in ease & it would definitely be the viscosity. The OPI Intell-Gel is perfectly balanced, meaning not too thick, not too thin, so I have complete control over my designs.

OPI: What's been the best part of working with Cynthia Erivo during all her fabulous Wicked events?

Dior: The best part has been witnessing her incredible energy and passion up close. Being part of her journey for such an iconic project is a dream come true, and it’s been amazing to execute nail sets that complement her bold style and personality. I’ve loved creating looks that not only elevate her red-carpet moments but also reflect the magical essence of Wicked. Beyond the artistry, Cynthia’s kindness and grace make the process so enjoyable, it’s so inspiring to work with someone so very talented and down-to-earth.

OPI: What’s your favorite nail shade or design to create?

Dior: I absolutely love French tips, any variation honestly. They’re the perfect base for anything, whether it’s a set with a lot of charms/stones or plain jane. I probably do two sets minimum of French tips every day so I would definitely say it is a design I specialize in 100%.

OPI: Which OPI Gel Nail Polish shade with Intelli-Gel Technology is your favorite for nail art?

Dior: My favorite are definitely Alpine Snow and Black Onyx. These two shades are so versatile and are must-haves that should be a part of every tech's essentials.
